Place Primer
So far in Luke,
- Jesus was born in the margins, to marginalized people
- Mary's song tells that God will take care of the marginalized
- John the Baptist: "you'd better take care of the marginalized" because the Messiah is coming
- Jesus says the kingdom is for the marginalized (maybe even what we might call "losers").
- This week Jesus tells us that He will even choose marginalized "sinners" be his friends and partners

A Retreat Reflection by Matt Bingham
The Place Retreat is one of the highlights of my year, so much so that when I initially planned our holiday to Maui and discovered that there was a conflict with this year's Retreat, the Hawaiian getaway was moved to later in October; my wife and I really did not want to miss it!
The Retreat has become an essential yearly tradition for me as it allows me to 'recharge the batteries'. I am afforded the opportunity to meet new people and it allows me to go deeper with old friends; for me, after The Place on a Sunday night is far from an ideal time to engage in meaningful conversation because there are so many distractions. Additionally, the Retreat is a time where I am intentional about slowing down, stilling my spirit, and being attuned to God's voice and leading. Because I am a person to whom God communicates through the beauty of Creation, being in such a stunning natural setting like Thetis Island is a perfect place for reflection. I also really, really love table tennis and He spoke to me a number of times during the weekend through the medium of this noble game!
When I look back on the 2009 Retreat one of the first things I will remember is the food, which was easily the best I have ever had at this event (and I've been to five or six Retreats)! The MacLeods and the Bargens, with the help of others, expended an incredible amount of energy planning and preparing the menu for the weekend, which paid off! We feasted on rotini with sundried tomatoes, chicken, and mushrooms; homemade chili with baked potato and cornbread, a crust-less breakfast quiche; breakfast burritos with sausages as well as a host of home-baked goodies and snacks throughout the weekend. There is something about great food that makes one feel that not only the body is being nourished, but the soul as well.
Lambrick's new morning pastor, Bob Opperman, was the speaker for this year's Retreat; he shared his story with those gathered and challenged us about the nature of true community and how the Cross speaks into that. Perhaps the most important thing I took away from what Bob shared was this simple equation: GRACE + TRUTH / TIME = LOVE. What a refreshing lens through which to view authentic Christian love, the bond which should be holding us together in true community.
I was able to attend a workshop put on by Doug Makaroff that touched on numerous aspects of sustainability and a Christian response to environmental stewardship, which I found extremely absorbing. The discussion got decidedly lively because whenever His Royal Hein-ness is involved, it ain't going to be a quiet affair, as we all know! Many others offered opinions, tips, and passionate discourse on how we, as Christians, can make positive choices to impact our world. Doug also outlined the work he does as an urban planner firmly rooted in developing sustainable communities--fascinating stuff! I wish I'd had more time to talk with him about this and I plan on following up!
And of course, being the Retreat, how could we forget about the open mic? From the traditional Kung Powley to CMcT & Company's Monty Python skit, from Kristy's scintillating, thought-provoking poetry to Randy's yearly dose of musical Canadiana (with full band, including Bob "I Can Hit The High Notes" McMillan), it was a memorable time of watching our community to showcase their individual and collective talents. A full shout out to first-timer Graeme Davies and well as majorly nepotistic props to, as one of our open mic MCs termed her, Caitlin "Angel Voice" Bingham (yeah, that's my wife!) for jobs well done! Furthermore, after hearing Janet read from Les Miserables Caitlin and I are strongly considering hiring her to do Storytime at our house for anybody who is interested--seriously, that reading voice of hers...
The Retreat is one of the most highly anticipated and significant annual events in the life of our community; if you were considering coming this year and could not make it, put it in your calendar for 2010 because it is not to be missed! Thanks to all those whose time, care, dedication, and planning make it possible for us to get away each year and enjoy fellowship with God and one another. See you next year!
